Benefit Brow Bar at Ulta

I was curious about the waxing services by Benefit at ULTA so I went in to check out the Brow Bar. The bar is actually separate from the ULTA Salon, performed by the standards of Benefit Cosmetics. A brow wax is $20 and a brow tweeze is $22. They also take care of other facial waxing as well as faux eyelash applications. If you buy their lashes ($15), application is $5, otherwise you'll pay $10.

Love & Toast is eco-friendly, soothing beauty

At the Cosmoprof Las Vegas show this year, I stopped by the Love & Toast booth. It had to be the cutest one there! Love & Toast is a cosmetics company out of Colorado. The creator, Margot Elena, is the founder of other great brands like Oprah's favorite, Lollia.
Love & Toast is a line of great smelling, eco-friendly bath and body products. The products contain no parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, mineral oil, propylene glycol, retinol, sulfates, or synthetic color. They are not tested on animals and are free of animal products. They even pass the seal of approval of Whole Foods and are carried in certain locations.

As the temperatures get colder and the sir gets drier, it has taken a toll on my hands. My favorite Love & Toast product, Sugar Grapefruit Handcreme has helped  a lot. It smells of of fresh, sweet grapefruit and the Shea butter, Macadamia nut, Olive, Avocado & Sunflower oils keeps your hands moisturized. I also love the aluminum tube it comes in. Small plastic bottles and tubes that other  hand lotions come in can be difficult to dispense. The price is also great, $9.

You can find the entire Love & Toast collection online, or locally at Skins 6|2 inside the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Hopefully we will soon see it in local Whole Foods locations!

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is the best

I have used a lot of eyeshadow primers but this one beats them all hands down. They also recently changed the packaging from a wand to tube, which makes application easier and more sanitary. You can apply this primer and then wait for it to dry, or just put your shadow right over it. It makes your shadow last all day and concentrates the pigments. It is also great with creme shadow. It gave my Make Up For Ever's Aqua Cream shadow a more uniform, smoother look.
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer is available in four colors, original (nude), Sin (Shimmering Champagne),  Greed (Gold) and Eden (Matte Tawny). Eden is great if you have "stained" eyelids, it will cover and prime at the same time. Available at Sephora and UrbanDecay.com, $19.

ColorOn Pro Instant Eyeshadow

I got the opportunity to try these cool instant eyeshadow appliqués, and give you the lowdown. The sets ColorOn Pro gave me were a smoky eye set and "Dreams", bold colors with eyeliners. The best thing about these appliqués is that they pack A LOT of color. The dreams colors didn't especially work for me, but I loved the smoky eyes. I have found it difficult to layer with regular eyeshadow to get a deep smoky eye. I end up with grey everywhere and no definition. Because I have a deep set eye, I applied a highlighter shadow  to my brow before adding the appliqué.

I would recommend watching the instructional video on the company website instead of just using the written instructions. If you miss a spot, you can blend it out, or just apply more with a corner of the appliqué. The color is so concentrated, you can use them 2-3 times per eye. You MUST apply the setting powder all over the design, or it will feel wet and sticky and could run.
I would buy these again - they would be great to take on vacation. Instead of hauling all your makeup and brushes, just take some instant eyeshadow! You can buy them online at www.coloronpro.com or locally at the ColorOn kiosk in the Fashion Show Mall.

A side note: ColorOn, eyeliner appliqués would be a great addition to your line!

Clarisonic Mia worth the money

I have been reading all the buzz about Clarisonic Cleansing Systems and watching men wander aimlessly  around Sephora during holidays looking for them, so I decided to bite the bullet at get one. The original Clarisonic costs $195 and the Mia costs $149. The main difference is the Mia only has one speed and the original has four. The Mia also comes with the sensitive brush head only. You can buy any of the other brush heads for the Mia ( Normal, Delicate, and Deep pore Cleansing). The only one that does not work with it is the body brush head. The single speed and sensitive brush head work fine for me. I do want to try the deep pore head next time.
The main benefit of the Clarisonic cleansing system is the removal of dead skin. When we are younger, the dead skin seems to slough off by itself, but as we age, the skin needs a little help. I use my Mia about once a day, in the shower. I went on vacation for a week and didn't bring it with me and I could definitely see the difference. The prices seem to her very consistent. The only place you might get a better deal is on QVC. They sometimes have special edition versions that come with extra product, like the Clarisonic PLUS bliss Face & Body Collection.

Fall Beauty Preview Party at Neiman Marcus

Two great local bloggers, Christie and Laura hosted a Fall Beauty Preview at Neiman Marcus last week. The event was complete with pomegranate martinis, mini-cupcakes and a photo booth. While the ladies waited for a mini makeovers, they enjoyed passed appetizers and music from the in-house DJ.
Christie and Laura's picks were displayed throughout the beauty department, along with new picks for Fall.

I took this opportunity to try the much loved DiorSkin Air Flash Foundation. This spray on foundation contains mother of pearl pigments to diffuse light and even out skin. You can spray it straight on your face or spray it on a brush or sponge first (good idea if your don't want to get it on your clothes). The coverage is great. I didn't need concealer, and I always need it. Dior makeup artist Desiree completed my look with the rest of the Dior line.

My notables: 5 Couleurs Lift Eye Shadow, this shadow compact contains an eye primer with anti-aging properties for a smoother look and Dior Addict Ultra Gloss, maximum shine and not sticky.

Guest who RSVP'd with Christie and Laura got a little gift bag containing a red velvet Neiman Marcus makeup bag filled with deluxe samples, including the new exclusive fragrance by Prada, Candy.

Don't miss out on the next great event. Follow Christie's (www.icanstyleu.com/blog) and Laura's (www.lollieshopping.com) blogs!

Bargain Base

A great bargain foundation for around $9

I am not a big fan of liquid foundations, but as I age I find that I need a little more coverage. That being, said, I don't want to spend $30 or more on something I probably won't use everyday. I saw Sara mention L'oreal Paris' True Match Super Blendable liquid makeup on KLG and Hoda. She claims that this is the foundation used by their makeup artists. I used L'oreal's True Match Blendable Compact makeup and didn't like it, possibly because it was to heavy.
The key to L'oreal True Match is picking your shade. It is best to go to a drugstore and use their shade finder. You take this plastic swatch strip and place it over the under side of your wrist. Your shade is the color that fades away next your skin. You can also go on www.lorealparisusa.com and use their color match database. It will match your color based on your current favorite brand (limited). Once you find your shade, they will offer you a coupon. The foundation has a light creamy texture that you can apply with your fingers, a sponge or a brush. You can build on the coverage, but you should use a concealer first. You also get the benefit of SPF 17 protection. At $9, this foundation can compete with any department store brand.

Suave Salon Professionals products go the distance

Suave has recently launched a line of "professionals" products that mimic the expensive hair products out of the market. I tried two of them, and here is my review.

Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Spray, $3
Dry Shampoo has made its way into many of our haircare routines. It dissolves oil and revives hair if you don't have the time to wash it. It can also give a boost to roots and help disguise roots in between colorings.  The only negative has been the price. A small bottle of Oscar Blandi costs $11.00 and lasts for two applications, if you're lucky. This new dry shampoo by Suave does everything Blandi's does with out the high price. It also smells good, unlike the others I have tried (Oscar Blandi and Salon Garphix). I have been using this bottle a few times a week for about a month and there is still a lot left.

Suave Touchable Finish Super Hold Hairspray, $3
Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Super Hold Hairspray is supposed to compare to Paul Mitchell's Freeze and Shine Super Spray. My main gripe with hairspray is that after you've applied it, your hair feels dirty later. This hairspray did not do that. It has a decent hold, smells good and performs like a higher end hairspray. I wouldn't call it spectacular, but a great value at around $3.

Undercover Concealer by Rain is the last concealer you will ever use

When you're younger, you use concealer to cover up blemishes and minor skin issues. As we age, concealer becomes more important for covering skin issues like dark circles, rosacea and uneven skin tone. Most women wear concealer that is too light for their complexion. How many times have you looked at old pictures of yourself or your friends and noticed white "rings" under their eyes.

Undercover Concealer by Rain Cosmetics takes the guesswork out of finding your shade. The dual concealer comes in two shades, Concealed Weapon for light to medium skin tones and Master of Disguise for medium to dark skin tones. Each one has a darker color for covering up imperfections and a lighter color for under the eyes and highlighting. Apply it with a concealer brush for smooth coverage.
Undercover Concealer in Concealed Weapon, $18

Undercover Concealer in Master of Disguise, $18

You can buy Rain Cosmetics at Elements at Aria, Mia Bella Salon and at other Las Vegas resorts. You can also shop online at www.raincosmetics.com

Furlesse patches help relax forehead lines

I am no stranger to using patches to eliminate forehead wrinkles. Although it is slower process than Botox, it is a lot cheaper and no needles. The patches work by reinforcing the weak facial muscles back to their pre-wrinkle status. Furlesse patches are a welcome change to their predecessor, Frownies. Don't get me wrong, Frownies work, but they have a few negatives. They are not easy to apply, even harder to remove and they can be itchy, especially in dry climates.
Furlesse patches are made of a clear, non-latex, self-adhesive plastic. They are easy to apply and remove.  You can even wear them around the house without being embarrassed to answer the door. I actually prefer to wear them during the day, (normal use is at night) letting gravity do more of the work. It took me about one month of daily use to get rid of my wrinkles and then you need to wear them less frequent for maintenance. The cost is $12.95 for a 30 day supply. You can get them at drugstore.com, amazon.com, beauty.com and furlesse.com. Look for new Furlesse patches for other areas of the face, coming soon.

The pitfalls of buying makeup on Etsy

I still love Etsy and I will still buy from shops on the popular homemade website, but I am disappointed in one of their merchants. I bought a mineral powder foundation from Orglamix (and even reviewed it in my beauty column.) only to find they have disappeared. I went to their Etsy site, and for a few weeks it read, on vacation. They kept updating their Facebook and Twitter pages and I thought eventually they would return. Then one day, the Etsy site was gone.
I did some research on the internet and found rumors that the company was simply buying someone else's product and putting their stickers/packaging on it. So not only was the product not made by them, it probably wasn't organic or even all natural. Oh, well you win some you lose some. If anyone actually knows what the name of the products are that they were passing off as their own, leave a comment! I liked it whatever it was!

The most expensive nail polish you won't regret buying

For those of us who don't get regular manicures, great nail polish is a must. I wandered upon my new favorite in Nordstrom while browsing Deborah Lippmann's products. "Happy Birthday" is the coolest polish I have ever seen. It is made up of red, yellow, blue, orange, green purple, silver and gold mini confetti in a clear base. It almost looks like someone threw a bunch of confetti and it landed on your nails, hence the name "Happy Birthday".

I just had to have it. Even at $18. Now, you have to consider that this is a premium brand that contains no toluene, formaldehyde or DBP. It is sold out   online and Nordstrom says they can barely keep it in stock. The one negative - the sales lady told me it takes a while to get it off.
Deborah Lippmann is a manicurist that started mixing up polishes for her celebrity clients like Mariah Carey, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cher.  She also has a line of hand and foot treatments, her "Rich Girl" hand and cuticle cream with SPF 25 is to die for. Here is what Happy Birthday looks like on:

Living Proof Full Thickening Cream

Living Proof Full Thickening Cream

After seeing this product demonstrated on QVC, I thought I would give it a try. I have thin, fine hair and this leave-in treatment is supposed to make it appear thicker, with more body. It is pricey, $14 for a 1.8 ounce bottle, but you only need a pea-sized amount. I put a little more than that in my hair, being careful not too put it too close to my roots. It did work. My hair felt thicker without feeling like I had product build up. I thought it was great, until I went outside. The heat from the sun hits your hair and it emits a smell like you are at an outdoor fish market. Now, I had read reviews on makeupalley.com that complained about the smell, and I assumed it was too flowery or something. Good thing Sephora took it back. Living Proof, if you are listening, fix the smell and I will buy it again!

Why I am trading MAC for Make Up For Ever

Make Up For Ever Iridescent Eyeshadow in Yellow Gold (10)

I have been using MAC products since they day they appeared. Even when my favorite color was discontinued I kept loyal. When Sephora partnered with Make Up For Ever and created the studio boutiques, I decided to give them a try.

First I traded in my Studio Fix powder Foundation for Make Up For Ever Duo Mat Foundation. Make Up For Ever's formula had a better color match to my skin, but it is more expensive, $32 for .35 oz. vs. $26 for .52 oz..

Make Up For Ever eyeshadow is great. It comes in high pigment, bright colors that layers and blends easily. Yellow Gold (right) can be a subtle yellow or a deep gold. The price seems high at $19, but you double that of a MAC shadow that costs $14.50.

Make Up For Ever was created by artist Danny Sans in Paris, France, where it is still made. It was  designed so the actors and models in Paris could apply it themselves. Visit the Make Up For Ever Boutique in the Venetian and choose from their menu of services, eyes, face, lashes. A lesson and color match is free with purchase. You can even stop by before a night out and get one of over 70 lashes applied.

MAC has been focusing on selling new collections (like their parent company Estee' Lauder) instead of creating great looks for their clients. Give Make Up For Ever a try, you won't be disappointed.
